We’ve been pondering our mission lately at Way of the Cactus, checking in about what we are still feeling passionate about and who we want to serve. We’ve reflected on 2017 and made some decisions about going forward.
We’ve loved meeting artists, woodworkers, jewelry makers and dressmakers who share our passion for creating high quality, beautiful items that are good for the planet. We’ve absolutely felt warm and fuzzy when we’ve been able to connect those beautiful, ethically made sensory items with children and adults who needed them and loved them. Your photos have brought us joy. We’ve learned a lot about sourcing stock, about inventory, shipping, and currency conversion (the horror).
We’ve also learned what we don’t love - the hustle to sell, the pull to ‘marketing’ and consumerism and cheap crappy products pitched to our community as the ‘next big thing’ they need (yes, fidget cubes, we’re talking about you).
We’ve learned how to run a business as four very different neurodiverse people - working with different people’s skills and energy and supporting each other with tasks we find hard.
It’s been a blast.
It’s also felt that Way of the Cactus wasn’t yet the full picture of how we want to serve neurodiverse people.
Beyond finding ethical, sensory treasures and connecting talented makers of beautiful things with our community (which we will keep doing), we want to share, encourage, and support you as we ‘live the Way of the Cactus’.
What on Earth do we mean by ‘living the way of the cactus’?
We’re all doing the best we can to live as neurodiverse people or families who don’t necessarily fit in and as people who find the world a little harsh and unforgiving. We’re like the cactus, we find our own ways to thrive and live well and to blossom in harsh environments. We want to share how we live like the cactus - how we thrive. We have some ideas about living well, sustaining yourself, your mind and body. We seek to go gently on the environment and be compassionate towards others - we’ll share what we are up to with you as we do that this year.
We want to share stories with you about how other people live their own way of the cactus in the hope you might get some practical tools that will prove useful for your own life. Expect to see our blog expand this year, with more stories from us. Our website has changed a little too, so we have more focus on those stories.
Later on this year, when we have some space, we’d like to offer some more practical support in service to our community. But for now, we hope you’ll connect with us as we share stories that bring together neurodiverse people and our families who, like us, are:
- Seeking to be conscious consumers
- Going gently on our environment
- Caring for our bodies and minds
- Going kindly along the path
We are looking forward to building the Cactus community in 2018.
